Twentieth Anniversary Macintosh

Although Apple turned 20 on April 1, 1996 the Twentieth Anniversary Macintosh was introduced at MacWorld in San Francisco on January 7th, 1997. It was then released on March 20th, 1997 with a retail price of $7,499. The twentieth anniversary Macintosh was very unique in both design and color from the rest of the Macintosh family. It was very thin and sleek looking. The screen was thin and curved and the computer was rounded. Very sleek for it’s time, but not the most reliable computer ever produced by a long shot. It’s hard to find one that still works. Our family bought two from the company store, each employee was allowed to purchase one so we found someone who wasn’t going to buy theirs. We think we paid around $2,000 for each computer. They were Christmas presents in 1997 and opened amongst much excitement as the packaging was in typical Apple style. Both computers had problems shortly after purchase, they crashed and need to be re-started way too often. One was used for about a year and the other for a little longer before they were just not reliable enough to even bother with. Not to our surprise, production of the Twentieth Anniversary Macintosh was discontinued on March 14th of 1998.
Although this machine was very beautiful, it sort of stood for everything that Apple was at the time – designing beautiful futuristic things with limited and expensive hardware components. [1]
